Artist Biography

----------------------

Sébastien Érard (5 April 1752 - 5 August 1831) was a French instrument maker of German origin who specialized in the production of pianos and harps, developing the capacities of both instruments and pioneering the modern piano.

Érard's pianos were also widely appreciated by the foremost musicians - Beethoven, Chopin, Fauré, Haydn, Herz, Liszt, Mendelssohn, Moscheles and Verdi are just a few of the famous composers who owned Erard Pianos.
Today, Erard pianos are very rare and desirable, especially the concert grands, which are deemed the best of the best. Sebastian Erard had such success that Queen Marie Antoinette commissioned him the court piano maker.
In 1823, House of Erard was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor for his invention of the mechanism "Dual exhaust", which subsequently was used in the production of all pianos.

After the death of Sebastian Erard in 1831, the house of Erard was continued by his nephew, Pierre Erard. And by this time it became the supplier of the French court, Queen Victoria, the Imperial Court of Russia and the Emperor Napoleon III during the Second Empire.
